A High-Stakes Conversation on AI and Democracy Comes to Baltimore

On Wednesday, May 14 at 6 PM, the public is invited to Shriver Hall at Johns Hopkins University for a live debate on one of the most urgent issues of our time:

Can the U.S. Outpace China in AI Through Chip Controls?

The Hopkins Forum is a new debate series co-hosted by the SNF Agora Institute and Open to Debate. This installment brings together experts in national security, technology, and foreign policy for a lively exchange on how the United States should navigate the global AI race—and whether current strategies are helping or hurting our long-term position.

This is a rare chance to hear from both sides of a critical issue with local, national, and international implications. Whether you’re interested in democracy, technology, global affairs, or just enjoy a good debate, this event offers something for everyone.

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

Speakers include:

  • Will Hurd, former U.S. Representative, CIA officer, and board member of OpenAI
  • Lindsay Gorman, head of technology and geopolitics at the Alliance for Securing Democracy
  • Susan Thornton, former US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs
  • Paul Triolo, Partner at DGA–Albright Stonebridge Group

Moderator: John Donvan, Emmy Award-winning journalist
