The Maryland Lottery and the state’s six casinos brought in a record-breaking more than $1.391 billion in profits in Fiscal Year 2021 to help fund state programs and services, Maryland Lottery and Gaming reported on Monday.
The combined total lottery and casino profits broke Maryland’s previous record of $1.311 billion in Fiscal Year 2019 by $80 million, a 6.1% increase.
Maryland saw a record number of lottery sales with $2.611 billion in sales, up $414 million, or 18.8%, from the previous record set in Fiscal Year 2018.
Lottery ticket profits contributed $667.4 million to state programs in Fiscal Year 2021, again surpassing Fiscal Year 2019’s record of $593.1 million.
Maryland has six casinos: Live! Casino & Hotel, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, Hollywood Casino Perryville, Ocean Downs Casino, MGM National Harbor, and Rocky Gap Casino Resort.
Together, the state’s casinos generated a total of $1.746 billion in gaming revenue and contributed $723.5 million to the state. That contribution broke the Fiscal Year 2019 record with an 0.8% increase.
The casinos contributed $531.4 million to the Maryland Education Trust Fund. Fiscal Year 2021 casino gaming revenue also contributed $92.2 million for local aid to communities and jurisdictions where the casinos are located; $78.8 million to Maryland’s horse racing industry; $17 million to Maryland’s Small, Minority and Women-owned Business Fund; and $4.1 million to responsible gambling programs.
“It’s exciting to set records, but the achievement we’re most proud of is that we remain a vital source of revenue that supports the people of Maryland,” Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin said in a statement. “Our staff is mindful of that goal every day, and we appreciate the hard work on the part of our Lottery retailers and casino partners. It’s truly a team effort.”
