The national media isn’t only focusing on the Freddie Gray trials in Baltimore in these early days of summer. After 40 years of serving beer in two Orioles ballparks, Fancy Clancy is finally getting his due.
StoryCorps started the rally with a profile of the man born Clarence Haskell. He estimates that he’s sold more than a million beers. The report also puts one of Clancy’s classic lines into the lexicon: “Hey! Empty your pockets, put your money in your hand, cuz here’s Clancy, your beer man!”
This week, ESPN kept the inning going with a fan profile in which reporter Reese Waters learns how to be a beer vendor. Clancy reveals one of his early innovations, involving pouring a beer behind his back. For those impressed by the fitness level of beer vendors, there are also pushups involved.
