Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz recorded his 500th career home run in Tampa Bay on Saturday, and he recovered the ball thanks to a Baltimore Orioles fan with a premonition.
“He told me he sat there because he had a feeling he was going to catch my 500th home run today,” Ortiz said of the “very nice,” “young guy” in an Orioles shirt who fought for and then delivered the milestone ball to one of the Birds’ greatest adversaries.
Ortiz told the Boston Herald that the Red Sox “put [together] a very nice package for him.” Well, he deserves it! The paper estimated that the ball might have fetched more than $100,000 at auction.
It’s all a nice story, except for one disturbing wrinkle: Ortiz said he and the team “kind of forced” the fan to change his shirt.
