In Praise of Baltimore’s Metal-Heads

Baltimore metal fans

Bobby Gladden, the Perry Hall school shooter, prominently featured Rammstein quotes on his Facebook page; the Sikh temple shooter attended a festival of racist hate metal bands in Baltimore. Overall, it’s been a rough summer for many of our city’s metal fans, who too often get lumped in with haters and killers when really they just want to thrash. Which is one reason we were happy to see Baltimore photographer J.M. Giordano‘s beautiful images of local metal fans in all their dark and lovely glory.

Each year, Maryland Death Fest draws the region’s tattooed, pierced, and heavily-eyelinered for a celebration of grindcore, doom, thrash, hardcore, and all things metal. Killer Angels:  Faces of Deathfest is Giordano’s documentation of that world, and it’s gorgeous. Some more of our favorite images below the jump.
