Twenty-year-old Joanna Guy was crowned Miss Maryland on Saturday night in Hagerstown — she’ll represent the state in the Miss America 2013 pageant. (Above she performs “Popular” from the musical Wicked in a 2009 contest.)
Guy won the pageant’s preliminary swimsuit and talent competitions. Previously named Miss Queen State, she also conquered Miss Maryland’s Outstanding Teen competition. A former Congressional Award for Youth winner, a Maryland Distinguished Scholar, and member of the National Honor Society, she was also an Intel International Science Fair Winner and Discovery Channel National finalist.
Now studying at Cornell, Guy majors in American Studies and is a member of an all girls’ a cappella troupe. And while she obviously fits right in with pageant stock — tall, trim, toothy/smiley, striking, strong diction — there’s something refreshing about Guy. Not only is she science-smart and politically interested, she’s funny. Listen to her great phrasing in the silly song “Popular” — the Garrett County girl’s got a sense of humor about herself, and the world. We wish her all the luck at the Miss A. contest next year, where levity’s bound to come in handy backstage, and more importantly, in real life after Cornell.
