Three days after buying a bag of uncooked spinach at their local Giant, a Maryland couple discovered yesterday that it came with a rare bonus prize.

NBC4 in Washington D.C. spoke with Sri Sindhusha Boddapati and her husband, Shanmukha Pranay Rajeev Jerripothula, of Chevy Chase, Md., yesterday after they told the station they found a live scorpion crawling through their pre-packaged greens.

With Jerripothula away at work, Boddapati took matters into her own hands, trapping the insect in a water bottle and taking a video to share with her husband. She described the discovery: โ€œI saw something inside the bag crawling. I thought it was a cricket in the beginning, and then I noticed when it was [in] the bottle that it is a scorpion.โ€

When Jerripothula got home, he took the water bottle back to their neighborhood Giant.

โ€œI told them not to sell the spinach anymore, because it might contain a scorpion,โ€ he said matter-of-factly to NBC.

While ABC7 reports that employees initially said they wouldnโ€™t stop selling the bagged veggies, NBC says the Giant location pulled its store-brand spinach from the shelves nearly six hours later. The company, which is based in Landover, issued a statement to both stations saying it prioritizes customer satisfaction, regrets the inconvenience and has followed up with the supplier.

Giant hasnโ€™t recalled its bagged spinach, per FDAโ€™s website.

This may sound odd, but some people eat bugs on purpose. In Baltimore, one can even get a scoopful of โ€œsustainable proteinsโ€ โ€” mealworms, crickets and grasshoppers โ€” at the MOMโ€™s Organic Market at The Rotunda. However, thatโ€™s a different type of shopping trip than one that yields an accidental scorpion inside a bag of otherwise perfectly good produce.
