Soul Cannon labels its genre as โExperimental/Hip-Hop (from the future),โ and thatโs pretty apt, with the bandโs sound melding hip-hop, jazz, avant-garde music, indie rock and much more. Among other accolades, theyโre one of the only bands in town that can count a current city councilman, Ryan Dorsey, as a former member. On Instagram, MC Eze Jackson is promising some new material, so itโll be interesting to see the bandโs latest concoction.
But really, a lot of the music on tonightโs bill feels like itโs tapping into some distant place, from the alien R&B crooning :3lON to the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink pastiche of Afrofuturist rapper D.Y.Y.O to the experimental folk of Nina Gala. From top to bottom, the lineup packs in a bunch of sounds without being beholden to any one influence or genre.
