UPDATE: The show has been cancelled.

Violent Femmes, the folk punk heroes behind such indie staples as โ€œBlister in the Sun,โ€ โ€œAmerican Musicโ€ and โ€œAdd it Up,โ€ are playing a free show as part of WTMDโ€™s Live Lunch series.

The group is squeezing in the free gig on July 31, in between shows in Washington D.C. and New York on a tour in support of โ€œHotel Last Resort,โ€ the bandโ€™s 10th album. The record is due out tomorrow, and to the delight of hardcore fans, the website AllMusic.com said it โ€œfollows the formula the Violent Femmes have been perfecting since their inception, delivering an above average batch of their wiry, smart, and sometimes tortured songs.โ€

As the name Live Lunch suggests, the show at WTMDโ€™s studios starts promptly at noon. Doors open at 11:45 a.m., and spots are first-come, first-seated.

Landing a band that is playing at a massive venue like The Anthem in D.C. for an intimate in-studio show is a big get for the local indie music station.

โ€œNot only are the Femmes one of the most influential bands to emerge from the electrifying โ€™80s underground, but they are one of the few that are still making vibrant and significant music,โ€ Scott Mullins, WTMDโ€™s station manager and program director, said in a statement. โ€œWe are thrilled to welcome them to the WTMD studios and offer our listeners an opportunity to experience this legendary band in our intimate live performance space.โ€
