Maryland has confirmed a total of 1,008,178 positive coronavirus cases to date, including 2,116 newly reported since last Friday.
The seven-day average positive test rate declined to 1.47%, reaching its lowest point since mid-July 2021. This time last week, the average sat at 1.58%.
The number of people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Maryland has fallen to 210, the lowest amount since late July 2021. The state had 254 coronavirus-related hospitalizations a week ago.
All 24 of Maryland’s jurisdictions are experiencing low levels of community transmission of coronavirus, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention‘s latest update on Thursday.
Maryland has administered a total of 11,457,805 coronavirus vaccine doses to date, including 2,218,961 booster shots.
Since last Friday, state officials have newly reported administering 36,995 vaccine doses, including 20,395 booster shots.
A new subvariant of omicron is rising in Maryland and other parts of the U.S., but health officials say there may not be a wave of severe illness again, the Baltimore Sun reported.
Still, coronavirus continues to pose the most risk to immunocompromised individuals, older adults, children under 5 who are not able to get vaccinated, and other people who are unvaccinated or have not received a booster shot.
Advocates worry that people who are ineligible for vaccination and others who are at greater risk of getting COVID-19 – even being vaccinated – will face increased threat of infection, illness and death as mask mandates and other requirements are lifted.
