The High Zero Festival of Experimental Improvised Music will be back in Baltimore next month for its 24th celebration of unrehearsed music and artistry.

Twenty two artists will take the stage at the Baltimore Theatre Project for completely improvised performances Sept. 15-18. Performances start at 8:30 p.m. each night.

The theater is located in Midtown at 45 W. Preston St.

Among this year’s performers are 11 international artists and 11 local Baltimore artists, including the 2022 Pulitzer-winning composer and solo noise music performer Raven Chacon.

Festival attendees will enjoy classically trained and self-taught musicians, dancers, and performance artists. Some artists even use their own invented instruments or techniques. Each night, organizers arrange the artists strategically to create fresh, new performance combinations.

During the pandemic, High Zero Foundation expanded its programming by hosting a streamed concert series, “Red Room in Your Room.” This series opened the door to an international fan base and enabled the foundation to showcase more “high-profile artists.” It also helped start the Diffusion Festival and the Worlds in Collusion festival at Artscape.

“High Zero has proven time and again that radical music can be popular, and has had a palpable
effect on the cultural scene in Baltimore,” festival officials said in a press release. “The festival highlights Baltimore as home to highly unusual, risk-taking, and adventurous artists and productions.”

Four-night festival passes are priced at $60. Attendees can also purchase one-night tickets for $20, or $10 for students, seniors, and artists at the door.

  1. Where will the performances be? The High Zero website itself doesn’t even refer to any venue/locations.

  2. Um… will this happen at a specific location or will it come to me wherever I am? I could find no clue in the text.
