Honoring my father, retired Col. in the Air Force & Vietnam vet. Honoring my grandfather, served in the Merchant Marines WWII. Best story about his run down unit on their last leg, when they stopped to tend to men who were too wounded to carry on. He and another soldier walked 5 miles to the next town in France and met a villager who let them borrow equipment and buy cream so he could make ice cream. They carried it by horse & cart back to the unit, where the wearied soldiers were delighted. The ice cream gave them what they needed to carry on! Remember that when you’re enjoying yours this weekend. He also said that not washing his hair for weeks, while wearing a helmet all day gave him Italian Stallion locks that drove the women crazy. Not sure about that one, but that’s how he remembered it! RIP & thank you for your service.
