Maryland Gov. Wes Moore last month signed into law a bill that will support economic development in West Baltimore and along the historic West North Avenue commercial and residential corridor.
The bill was signed as an emergency measure to support long-neglected West Baltimore communities.
The West North Avenue Development Authority, a 2021 supportive program created by the state legislature that aids the development of neighborhood improvement plans, was established by the bill as Maryland’s economic development agency to benefit Baltimore. The economic development agency provides solutions, resources and partners for projects that support community development and economic success.
The bill allows the West North Avenue Development Authority to continue implementing their plans and strategies to fund economic development, housing, transportation, neighborhood and green space along with bringing back arts, culture and entertainment.
A part of the developmental plans in West North Avenue is the 2027 creation of a retail center called The Shoppes at Reservoir Square that will foster economic opportunities and growth between Park Avenue and Eutaw Place.
“This is a historic investment in economic and workforce development for individuals and small businesses in our historically underserved neighborhoods,” said Del. Melissa Wells, who represents Maryland’s 40th legislative district.
