Shriver Hall Concert Series (SHCS) will begin its 60th anniversary season with an Oct. 5 performance featuring music by Johannes Brahms, Clara and Robert Schumann, and Amanda Maier.

The opening concert marks the return of violinist Gil Shaham and pianist Orli Shaham, siblings renowned in their own rights. Gil Shaham is a Grammy-winning violinist whom The Guardian described as โ€œamong the most inspired violinists of his generation.โ€ Orli Shaham was lauded as a โ€œbrilliant pianistโ€ by The New York Times. They have each appeared separately in the SHCS, but the Oct. 5 concert will be a rare duo-recital.

โ€œMy brother Gil and I are excited to come back to Shriver Hall Concert Series, where weโ€™ve enjoyed playing in the past,โ€ Orli Shaham said in a statement. โ€œWe’re delighted to bring to Baltimore a program centered around the pianist and composer Clara Schumann, and the warm and visionary musical world that she created for herself and her compadres. Weโ€™re bringing music that we’ve played together for years, like the Brahms D-minor Sonata, which has always been one of our favorites. Weโ€™re also including a couple of pieces that we began performing together just this past season.โ€

The season continues with the Baltimore debut of the Sphinx Virtuosi and cellist Sterling Elliott in an Oct. 19 performance, also at Shriver Hall. Sphinx Virtuosi is an 18-member self-conducted string orchestra that The Washington Post says performs with โ€œimmeasurable power, unwavering command, and soulful beauty.โ€ Their program is devoted to peach and the resilience of the human spirit. Elliott, making his debut with SHCS Subscription Series, is the soloist for American composer William Grant Stillโ€™s Suite, music inspired by Harlem Renaissance sculptures.

โ€œWe at Sphinx Virtuosi are thrilled to present โ€œVisions of Peaceโ€ at Shriver Hall Concert Series, marking our debut in Baltimore,โ€ said Andre Dowell, Chief Programming Officer at the Sphinx Organization, in a statement. โ€œThis powerful collection of music explores themes of unity, harmony, and hope, aligning with our shared mission to uplift and connect communities through transformative artistic experiences.โ€

November concerts include the launching of SHCSโ€™s free Discovery Series with the Baltimore debut of the Abeo String Quartet on Saturday, Nov. 8, and the string trio of violinist Tessa Lark, cellist Joshua Roman, and double bassist Edgar Meyer on Sunday, Nov. 16.

A series subscription costs $291, most single tickets are $48, and student tickets are $10. For information on the full season of concerts, programs, and performers, please visit the Shriver Hall Concert Seriesโ€™ website.
