This Make Space initiative takes place in the Southwest corridor in Baltimore City, in the Mount Clare Neighborhood. This project is a scattered site development project that spans a 4-5 block radius, including 18-20 residential units, green spaces, commercial buildings, and industrial spaces. This housing model sets out to prove how intentional, collectively-owned communities can create models of sustainability, specifically in distressed communities.
The goal is that once the majority of our residential units are sold, a collective entity will be formed by residents with the intention of collectively owning some of the community gathering spaces and green spaces Make Space is developing alongside the housing units. The majority of our residential units are sold at below market rate to participants that complete our specialized homebuyer training. Through the assistance of public and private grants and subsidies, we are able to pass along significant cost savings benefits to future homeowners.
The Make Space Accelerator is a creative home-buying program that is designed to do two things. First, we prepare you to purchase one of the homes we are developing in the Make Space community. Secondly, we help you shape your ideas on how to integrate your creative practice to serve as a resource to the community before you become a resident.
Our 8-week program has been built to share and stress the importance of having and maintaining a community-based arts practice. This program is educational and designed to be active, participatory and rigorous. Most of the training and workshops happen in-person, some are virtual. We estimate 60-70 hours needed to devote to this program. At the end of the program participants will be able to purchase one of the Make Space homes of their choosing for below market value and receive a 5k closing cost credit towards one of the Make Space homes.
The Make Space Accelerator Program is A 60-hour, home buying program for Baltimore creatives ready to build sustainable livelihoods and community power by becoming homeowners in the Mount Clare Community.
