The Preakness is this weekend, meaning horse racing media will descend on Baltimore, along with the rest of the sportโ€™s A-listers. Andrew Beyer is one such scribe. Though the longtime Washington Post columnistโ€™s journey isnโ€™t very far, heโ€™s apparently tired of making the trip.

Opening up his coverage of a Preakness week that ESPN says has โ€œadded importanceโ€ for Baltimore, Beyer penned a column calling Pimlico โ€œdecrepit, dysfunctional, devoid of charm or glamour.โ€ The Park Heights neighborhood that surrounds it is โ€œinelegant, to say the least, with no restaurants, hotels or shops,โ€ Beyer writes.

He revisits the oft-considered idea of rebuilding Pimlico, but heโ€™s even more taken by another idea. The Maryland Jockey Clubโ€™s other track, located in Laurel, has an โ€œabundance of virtues,โ€ Beyer writes. Thereโ€™s more space. It can also handle traffic, while getting out of Pimlico is a โ€œnightmare.โ€

And, of course, most importantly, itโ€™s located โ€œmidway between Baltimore and D.C.โ€
