Hot House: Sycamore Farm, 1560 Blue Mount Road, Monkton, MD 21111
Wood frame colonial style farmhouse, circa 1812 with wraparound front porch. Five bedrooms, 5.5 baths over 5,300 sq. ft. Partial unfinished basement. Hardwood floors, oversized windows with views, large rooms, high ceilings, 5 fireplaces, original architectural details. Master suite with attached bath and fireplace. Updated kitchen with heated floors. Fenced yard with patio. 10 year old asphalt roof, new furnace, new central A/C. In-law apartment, red painted barn (needs work) and separate detached cottage with water access. Direct access to Gunpowder River and trails. Agriculture zoned: $849,944
What: Fifty-five years ago, the owner and his wife, newly married, moved here when he finished his residency at Hopkins – after scouring three counties for the right “old house.” They renovated, bought more land, raised two daughters and every year, a few cows, (to keep its agricultural zoning). Now they’re moving back to her 18th century childhood home on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
The house is lovely. The sun pours in through those big windows. And it’s in good shape, although the outbuildings will need some work. Owners says it is a “known fact” that Blue Mount Road is the first road plowed when it snows in Baltimore County. It will be irresistible to lovers of property – fenced pastures and yellowing fields, snow dusted hills and the sound of water rushing after the rain. All this, from the breezy porch at the top of the hill.
Where: Blue Mount Road is way up there in Monkton, 15 minutes north of Wegmans, but not quite as far as Parkton, about 45 minutes from downtown Baltimore. There’s a Graul’s five minutes away at the Mt. Caramel Road exit. It’s rolling country, and the house sits atop its 34 acres with beautiful views from every window. Your privacy is complete. At the bottom of the hill, right where Little Falls pours into the Gunpowder, is a little boathouse/ shed, completely charming, to store your gear for fishing, tubing or kayaking on the river that flows just below – close to its widest point here. All the top Baltimore County Schools … Sparks and Hereford are a bus ride away. Great for a big, self-sufficient family, or one happy to import friends.
Why: Unique setting, pretty house, access to Gunpowder
Why Not: A lot of wallpaper removal …
Would Suit: Active folks, a little old fashioned, looking for peace and quiet
NB: Agriculture zoning means very low taxes, like $2,600 ….
Wonderful, and thank you, Howard & Mary J.
This is my favorite listing and I look forward to meeting the lucky new owner who will continue to make beautiful memories.
I got married at this beautiful house and it carries very special memories for me. If I were planning to settle down in Baltimore County, I would snap this property up in a heartbeat. It is gorgeous, peaceful, and a dream for outdoor lovers.
