It’s the Orioles’ day on Deadspin, as Gawker’s sports site cycles through its baseball previews. Fittingly for the long baseball season, the previews are happening more than a month into the campaign.

Writer Tom Scocca got the call from the Deadspin bullpen for this one, and immediately recognizes that the O’s fast jump out of the gates to first place in the AL East disproved a lot of baseball people who said their starting pitching would send them to the league’s basement.

“The thing about good offense, good defense, and good relief pitching is that each one of those things helps a team cover for less-than-great starting pitchers,” he writes.

He calls the team’s trio of sluggers in Chris Davis, Mark Trumbo and Pedro Alvarez a “monument to reasonable expectations,” and that seems to be the read on the pitchers and so-called stars of the team, as well. Except, of course, for Manny Machado, who Scocca says also happens to have the team’s best chin.

His headline is similarly noncommittal, calling on fans to “Root for the Orioles or don’t.” Let’s see him try to take that attitude at Camden Yards on a summer afternoon, even if there is no Boh.
