There are Sunday outings that keep children occupied, and then there’s one where they come home with a jump rope they made themselves and a fairly convincing account of meeting a fairy.
The 38th Annual Waldorf Fair, returning Sunday, November 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., belongs on the family calendar. On the Waldorf School of Baltimore’s wooded campus, beeswax candle rolling, a pumpkin catapult and an immersive Fairy Grotto offer an appealing answer to the perennial question of what to do with the kids.
The pleasures here are hands-on and refreshingly unhurried. Children can try a musical instrument, seek out the Traveling Pocket Fairy or settle in for a marionette show. Performed by Waldorf teachers who spend their evenings rehearsing, the shows are a Fair favorite. Booking ahead is wise.
Adults have their own reasons to linger: handmade goods from local artists, an early start on holiday shopping, live music and hot cider. There are food trucks and warm pretzels, though leaving room for the community bake sale would be sensible.
It’s a glimpse of the school’s approach to childhood, where making things takes time and imagination is given plenty of room. It also happens to be a very good way to spend a November Sunday.
