What: The owner of this house is Emmy-winning cinematographer Richard Chisolm, who has used his artist’s eye to create a Zen garden that can stop a walker in their tracks from 50 yards away.  The house sits at the end of Oakdale Road, where it dips down into Stony Run Park.  It is simple, and from the front, modest. But seen from the trail,  as it most often is, the home sits high above the landscape, mist rising from the pond, looming trees beckoning like a magical kingdom. All of the Zen elements are there — walls of bamboo, a Buddha garden statue, a graveled meditation area — but the effect is naturalistic rather then manicured, and maintenance could be relatively casual, allowing for a few odd hours weeding the gravel. For the right person, a garden like this could bring a lifetime of pleasure. In the words of Confucius, “the way out is through the door.”

Where: Oakdale Road, running east off of Roland Avenue, at the very end where it meets Stony Run Park. From here, you are about equidistant from Cold Spring Lane and the Roland Park shops and library (about a half mile in either direction). Johnny’s and Petit Louis are your local hangouts,  along with Eddie’s grocery store and the Starbucks on Roland Avenue. There are lots of schools within walking distance, both public and private. The bells of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen chime regularly, adding to the magical aura.

Why: Unique setting.

Why Not: Kitchen is basic and small, could use updating.

Would Suit: Anyone who has ever wished for Abraham Cowley’s  “a small house and a large garden; a few friends and many books, both true.”

NB: House has a sump pump.
