Cruise ships are such behemoths that you have to be very careful when you’re parking–er, sorry, docking–them. There’s really no such thing as a “love tap” when it comes to cruise ships.
On Sunday, a captain for Sprit of Baltimore was attempting to sail into port in Fells Point when he smashed into the dock instead, causing “significant” damage to the pier and sending two of the 412 people on board to the hospital with minor injuries. “We were pulling away and like the whole dock was tore up,” one passenger told the Baltimore Sun. “You hear some guy on the dock start cursing.” The captain, who has not been identified, is currently suspended; the cruise ship is fine.
In May, a Carnival Pride cruise ship missed its mark while docking, smashing into a gangway and damaging three cars in the process. But who am I to judge? I can barely parallel park a car, much less a massive ship.
