When the Baltimore Ravens and the Buffalo Bills face off on Saturday, so too will a pair of breweries in the football teams’ respective hometowns.
On Monday night, Colin Marshall, co-owner of Diamondback Brewing in Baltimore, received a proposition from Mike Shatzel, owner of Thin Man Brewery in Buffalo, New York.
“It’s Mike from Thin Man in Buffalo. Should we make a wager for next week?” the message read.
After mulling over the idea, the two breweries agreed to a friendly bet.
The owner of the brewery in the losing team’s town will travel with their signature hometown dish — crabs from Baltimore or wings from Buffalo — to the winner’s city for a collaborative brew day.
The losing brewery will also have Buffalo-based company Oxford Pennant produce a pennant to hang in the winner’s taproom. The pennant will read “Buffalo Diggs Baltimore” if the Ravens win, and “Buffalo is Lamarvelous” if the Bills win.
As the nation continues to be challenged by the coronavirus pandemic and political turbulence, a wager between two cities could be just what people need right now, said Diamondback Brewing co-founder Tom Foster.
“We’re facing tough circumstances in Baltimore and around the country, but hedging a friendly bet centered around our respective hometown teams, signature dish, and production of good beer makes the start of 2021 much smoother,” Foster said in a statement.
Diamondback Brewing, located at 1215 E. Fort Ave. in Baltimore, is open for take-out and delivery only due to the pandemic.
