1st Lt. Cara Novas Has Taken on a Big Personal Mission — to Support Her Fellow Marines

Novas, the caregiver for her wounded-veteran spouse and 2019 UMUC student commencement speaker, said her mission to support extends to the family members and others who sacrifice in serving alongside service members.

When Marine Corps 1st Lt. Cara Novas delivered the student keynote at her commencement ceremony May 19, she could relate to her audience as a military officer who has transformed her career with a University of Maryland University College graduate degree in cybersecurity while working full time.

But more importantly for Novas, she has done it with the additional obligation of caring for her husband, Junior, who had been severely wounded during two tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A Commitment to Service and Education: Marine and Entrepreneur Jake Messier Keeps His Promises on Both

UMUC When Jake Messier dropped out of college in his junior year to join the U.S. Marine Corps, he promised his dad two things: that he would see the world and that he’d finish his college education.

Messier became a Marine and spent the next nine years as a combat correspondent, traveling to 43 countries from Diego Garcia, an island in the Indian Ocean, to Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, covering stories about fellow servicemembers.

When Messier was assigned to Yokota Air Base in Tokyo, Japan, he knew that would be his last assignment ― and his last chance to make good on the second part of his promise. He enrolled at UMUC on base and set to work completing a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

Loyce Pailen, a doctor of management and director of the Center for Security Studies at University of Maryland University College (UMUC), has won the Cybersecurity Association of Maryland, Incorporated (CAMI) People’s Choice Award, announced April 11 during the 3rd Annual Maryland Cybersecurity Awards Celebration.
