โ€œFew individuals in our nationโ€™s history possessed a more expansive and compelling vision than Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,โ€ AVAM Executive Director Ellen Owens said in a statement. โ€œIn honoring Dr. King through our Dare to Dream Day celebration, we recommit to the ideals he advanced to bring about a more equitable and just society, engaging participants of all ages in the ongoing work to fully realize his vision in our own day and time.โ€

Activities and interactive and invite attendees to channel Kingโ€™s visions of peace and strength. Visit the Peace Birds Art Workshop to create a tangible symbol of hope and healing. Participate in a read-along and workshop led by B. Sharise Moore, author of A City Dream, where visitors can imagine a new world transformed by love and creativity. Take the stage at the Open Mic and Poetry Slam. Take in the lively performances by Divine Anointing Choir and the Keur Khaleyi African Dancers, who are returning for another year to AVAM.

The Open Mic and Poetry Slam is a beloved Dare to Dream Day tradition, giving artists of all ages the chance to showcase their talents before a wide audience at the museum for the chance to win a cash prize. The event takes place on the Jim Rouse Visionary Center (JRVC) 3rd floor. Those who wish to sign up can do so at the JRVC first floor desk before 1 p.m. This year, for those who want to join the fun without competing there will also be a Poetry Making Activity.

Visitors planning to stay on campus for the full day can purchase food and drinks in the AVAM Cafรฉ on the 3rd floor of the Main Building.

To carry on the spirit of Kingโ€™s vision, visitors are invited to donate new, unused toiletry, food, and winter clothing items in gallon Ziplock bags in support of Healthcare for the Homeless: an organization providing “health-related services, education, and advocacy to reduce the incidence and burdens of homelessness.”

AVAMโ€™s MLK Dare to Dream Day takes place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The museum is located at 800 Key Highway, Baltimore, MD.
