Get Up & Go! How to Spend Martin Luther King Day Weekend

Our city’s civil rights history is one of the richest in the country. From the fact that the first blood of the Civil War was shed here, to the NAACP headquarters sitting here today, Baltimore’s existence in that unique place between North and South has always meant we’re right in the center of things. Whether it’s a long weekend for you or not, here are some key ways you can spend it with an eye on history.

Today, at 2pm, there will be a children’s birthday party for Martin Luther King, held at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. The celebrations continue tomorrow as well, with a screening of the film Freedom Riders.

If you’ve got time for two museums, the Walters will be celebrating Dr. King today from 10am-4pm with free programs, performances, and special guests.

Admission is free on Sunday to AVAM, where they’ll have special programming all day– including performances and packets for educators celebrating Dr. King’s legacy.

For those with Monday off, you can attend the Martin Luther King, Jr. parade, which kicks off at noon at the corner of MLK and Eutaw. Beforehand, you can fill up on a special MLK Day brunch at spots like the Golden West Cafe, who’ll be offering a special menu for the day.
