To save lives and find homes for hundreds of abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens in the community, the Baltimore Animal Welfare Alliance (BAWA) is holding its eighth annual Baltimore 500: A Race to Save Lives adoption promotion. During the month of June, national Adopt-A-Cat month, Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS), Baltimore Humane Society, and the Maryland SPCA—all members of BAWA—are waiving their adoption fees for cats and kittens.
And new this year, Baltimore County Animals Services is participating in the Baltimore 500 as a BAWA member, and for the first time, the Humane Society of Harford County will also be participating in the month-long adoption promotion.
“We are now in ‘kitten season’ when there is a surge of unwanted kittens entering animal shelters that are already full with cats needing homes,” said Byron Logan, executive director of the Maryland SPCA. “It’s critical that we find homes for all of them.”
The goal for this year’s Baltimore 500 is to find homes for at least 500 homeless cats and kittens between all five organizations. All cats and kittens available for adoption are spayed/neutered and vaccinated according to their age. Baltimore 500 adopters will receive a voucher for a free exam for their cat or kitten and a toy for their new feline family member from Cat Hospital at Towson (CHAT). All regular adoption procedures apply.
Last year, 805 cats and kittens found new homes during the Baltimore 500, and since the inaugural event in 2009, there have been 5,007 adoptions.
“A cat or kitten can make a wonderful addition to a family,” said Jennifer Brause, executive director of BARCS. “Now is a great time to adopt a feline—we encourage people to take advantage of the waived adoption fees at the five shelters and help save a life.”
CHAT will be providing every adopter a certificate for a free wellness exam.
