Baltimore County Public Schools is looking for its next superintendent and it wants to hear from school staff and members of the public.
On Monday afternoon, the school district will host the first of four forums this week where school staff and community members will be able to share their feedback.
The search for BCPS’s next superintendent launched after current leader, Dr. Myriam Rogers, announced in Februrary that she would be retiring from the school system.
Rogers, who has served as Baltimore County Public Schools’ superintendent for the past three years, will retire July 1, 2026.
Members of the public and staff can also fill out an online survey to indicate what qualities they want to see in the school system’s next leader and to help prospective candidates “better understand the community’s thoughts, hopes and concerns for BCPS,” according to a news release.
The survey asks respondents to select the 10 most importnat characteristics for a superintendent candidate. Respondents are able to choose from 31 qualities, like a commitment to a “student centered” philosophy, a data-driven approach to decision-making, and experience in a K-12 classroom.
There is also a section for an open-ended response to what the respondent wants prospective candidates to know about the school district and community.
The Baltimore County school board last month contracted with executive search firm Ray and Associates to recruit, identify, and evaluate superintendent candidates. Feedback gathered from these forums and survey responses will help inform that national search.
“The public forums are an important part of that search process,” BCPS school board chair Jane Lichter said in a statement. “The perspectives gathered at the forums will provide to Ray and Associates the priorities, leadership qualities, and characteristics our community and staff want to see in a new superintendent, and I encourage everyone with an interest in ensuring a strong, successful, and future-oriented school system to join us and participate.”
Each forum will be split into two sections, starting with a staff session and followed by a public session.
The first three forums will be held in person, while the fourth will be held virtually.
The dates, times, and locations of the forums are as follows:
