With donations of $1.9 billion, or about 2.6% of his total wealth, Bill Gates tops the list of American philanthropists in 2012, Forbes reported ahead of Thanksgiving. Investment guru Warren Buffet was a close second with $1.87 billion.
Katonah, N.Y.-based George Soros was third on the list, with total donations of $763 million, or about 3.8% of his wealth. Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City, was at No. 7, with $370 million in donations. David Rubenstein, co-founder of the Washington, D.C.-based Carlyle Group, is one of the biggest philanthropists in the region with lifetime giving of $250 million. New York had 12 of the 50 biggest donors on the list.
