Start the weekend early with live music on the waterfront or a panel discussion with mystery writers. Then have your pick of puppet karaoke, adults-only night at the Science Center, more live music, or open mic comedy on Friday.

Get artsy on Saturday and Sunday with rock and canvas painting, enjoy live performances of the theater, comedy, or musical variety, and don’t forget stop by the Asia in a Bite Festival (all this fun is sure to make you hungry).

WTMD’s First Thursday Festival, Thursday, Aug. 7, 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., Canton Waterfront Park. Presented by CFG Bank and Maryland Energy Administration, this month’s concert will feature Plant Dad at 6 p.m., Kashus Culpeper at 7 p.m. and Oh He Dead at 8:30 p.m.

Contemporary Suspense and Hardboiled Fiction, Thursday, Aug. 7, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Bird in Hand. Moderated by Sujata Massey, this panel conversation will feature mystery writers Chris Chambers and KT Nguyen.

Rhinos & Winos, Friday, Aug. 8, 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Wine Collective. Support rhino conservation efforts with an evening of wine tasting, live music and a silent auction.

Puppet Karaoke, Friday, Aug. 8, workshop at 6 p.m., karaoke at 7 p.m., Baltimore Rock Opera Society. Karaoke enthusiasts can grab a puppet (or not) to help them sing their favorite tune. There will also be a puppeteering workshop before the main event, where attendees can learn the basics of puppetry.

Spur of the Moment, Friday, Aug. 8, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Keystone Korner. Join DC area-based Spur of the Moment for an evening of live jazz and R&B.

Science Trivia Crawl, Friday, Aug. 8, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Maryland Science Center. Grab some friends, and a drink, and search each exhibit to find answers to trivia questions. This event is 21+, and Ministry of Brewing will be on site to meet your adult beverage needs.

The REALLY COOL Open Mic, Friday, Aug. 8, doors/sign-up 7:30 p.m., show 8 p.m., Peabody Heights Brewery. Host They/Them Ty and special guest Jamie Mack present Baltimore’s Show for Women & Queer Comics, a comedy show for and by women and queer comics.

Ivy Kids Saturday: Rock Decorating with Alison Humphreys, Saturday, Aug 9., 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., The Ivy Bookshop. Paint rocks in the gardens behind the Ivy Bookshop with Alison Humphreys, author of 50 Hikes with Kids: Virginia and Maryland.

Asia in a Bite Food Festival, Saturday, Aug. 9 and Sunday, Aug. 10, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Baltimore Peninsula. Asia in a Bite is back for another weekend of Asian flavors and cultures. This monthly festival features 30+ food and beverage vendors.

Shrek The Musical Jr.: A Night to Remember, Saturday, Aug. 9, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., M&T Bank Exchange at the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center. R.I.S.E Arts Center, in partnership with The Arts Project, presents this family-friendly, end-of-summer stage production.

The Second Saturday S#!T Show feat. Parker Brown, Saturday, Aug. 9, doors and happy hour 7 p.m., show 8 p.m., Ottobar. Join host Mike Quindlen as he welcomes headliner Parker Brown; featured comedians David Grant, Lily Brackett, Dark Mark, and Kevin Slattery; and special guest Carlos Garcia.

Sunday Sesh – a Wake & Bake/Puff & Paint experience, Sunday, Aug. 10, 11 a.m., Ottobar. Get groovy with instructor Zoe G. and make art for a great cause, as this event will partially benefit Art with a Heart.

African Drumming Class, Sunday, Aug. 10, 1:30 p.m., The Catonsville Clubhouse. Explore the world of African drumming in this vibrant and dynamic class. This rhythmic journey traces its roots deep into the heart of African culture and tradition. Kids and adults welcome!

AJR, Sunday, Aug. 10, gates 5 p.m., show 6 p.m., Merriweather Post Pavilion. Joined by special guests Chelsea Cutler, Cavetown, Valley, and Benjamin Steer, multi-platinum indie pop trio AJR will make a stop in Maryland as part of their Somewhere in the Sky tour.

Free modern honkey-tonk and country concert, Sunday, Aug. 10, 6 p.m., Lurman Woodland Theater, Catonsville. Come enjoy Arte Hill as part of the Lurman Theater Free Concert Series. Bring blankets and chairs, a picnic dinner, and enjoy the serene setting of the natural amphitheater and great music!
