Baltimore songwriter and performer Jana Hunter was interviewed by Vogue about her band Lower Dens’ upcoming record Escape From Evil, and it’s awesome — all of it.

The photo (by Baltimore photographer Frank Hamilton) plays up Hunter’s innate standoffish charm and somehow winds up being very Vogue.

The interview is awesome, with insight about what went into songs on the new record (spoiler: a lot of grief). There’s even a sample from Lower Dens’ recent reading list (George W. S. Trow’s Within the Context of No Context).

The advance single, “To Die in L.A.,” is also awesome, moody, and triumphant. “I was listening to a lot of Madonna,” Hunter told Vogue. It shows! Here’s the song:

Escape From Evil comes out March 31 on Ribbon Music.
