Dr. Peter Beilenson has stepped down as Howard County health officer to become CEO of a new health care co-op.
Beilenson will become CEO of Evergreen Health Cooperative Inc., which recently received a $65 million federal loan to begin operating as an insurance option for Maryland residents once the state health care exchange goes into effect in January, reports the Baltimore Business Journal. Dr. Beilenson started Healthy Howard, a program to provide health insurance to all, during his leadership of the Howard County health department.
Dr. Beilenson previously served as the Baltimore City health commissioner. In addition to his role shaping health care policy, he teaches courses at Johns Hopkins University and has just released a new book, Tapping into The Wire, which looks at urban problems through the lens of the HBO series.
