2021 Maryland Heritage Awards | Call for Nominations
deadline October 15
sponsored by Maryland State Arts Council

The Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) is pleased to announce that nominations are open for 2021 Maryland Heritage Awards. The public is invited to nominate individuals, places, and traditions for outstanding achievement in traditional arts and culture. Awards are $5,000 each. Three winners will be selected and honored at a public ceremony. Nominations are due Thursday, October 15, at 5 p.m. Begin a nomination using MSAC’s application system, SmartSimple. Log in to SmartSimple or create a free account here.

Awards are given based on a nominee’s sustained commitment to a particular traditional practice, current importance to communities in which that traditional practice is significant, and past contributions to that traditional practice. Each year, winners are chosen in the categories of Person or People, Place, and Tradition. Read the Heritage Awards guidelines and evaluation criteria here.

Maryland Traditions, the traditional arts program of MSAC, has given Heritage Awards annually since 2007. See a list of past winners here.

Let’s Build The Patterson Theater out of Legos!
deadline September 24
Creative Alliance Kickstarter Campaign

We’ve got a crazy idea to celebrate our 25th Anniversary.

Help us build the first Lego Landmark in Baltimore – The Patterson Theater!

2020 is our 25th Anniversary year. We had HUGE plans for a year-long party but the reality has been pretty different. We had to shut our doors, cancel incredible programs, drastically cut our budget, transfer our youth classes online, and start from scratch with virtual programming.

We are lucky to be a small and nimble organization and we have adapted quickly to the new challenges. We created a slew of new programs to directly support Baltimore artists and communities in need, but we’ve also had to cut all the extra fun we had planned for our birthday year.

So here’s our request: help us create a birthday present for Creative Alliance – A LEGO Patterson!

Do you know that Brick Master Mel Brown (from the hit show Lego Masters) is a Maryland resident? Mel is standing by ready to build, build, build! We just need the LEGO’S! And to make this scale replica we need a TON of LEGOs! This is where you (and this Kickstarter campaign) come in!

The 4 ft scale replica will include the theater, marquee lounge, BUS sculpture, resident studios, main gallery, and more! These videos of the build and final lego structure building will allow us to launch a larger fundraising campaign to make sure we have enough funds to keep our programs running, adapting, and safe as we slowly start to reopen our doors.

Baltimore Open Studio Tour | Call for Applications
deadline September 13
sponsored by BOPA

The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA) announces that the 32nd annual Baltimore Open Studio Tour will occur virtually the weekend of October 24-25, 2020. Baltimore Open Studio Tour is an annual showcase of artist studios throughout Baltimore City, held each October as part of Free Fall Baltimore and in conjunction with National Arts and Humanities Month. Baltimore Open Studio Tour invites the public into artists’ workspaces to view or purchase original works of art, meet the artists, and get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into their creative processes. This year, due to the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Pandemic, the tour will feature a weekend full of virtual studio tours, artist talks and art exhibitions across BOPA’s social media platforms on Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25, 2020.

Transforming this annual in-person event to a virtual experience allows Baltimore City artists to showcase their work, studio, and creative process to the Baltimore community and beyond. Twenty artists and galleries will be featured in Baltimore Open Studio Tour this year. Applications for artists to participate in Baltimore Open Studio Tour are available here and due by Sunday, September 13, 2020.
