The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra has announced its spring concert lineup, which in addition to symphonic masterpieces, will feature a tribute to jazz legend Duke Ellington, fun family-friendly performances, and a live orchestral performance of “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark” in concert.

BEETHOVEN’S FIFTH AND MORE

The iconic Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony starts off the month of March, with BSO’s music director Jonathon Heyward conducting. The program also features Berg’s Violin Concerto, with virtuoso Augustin Hadelich on violin. Martinů’s “Memorial to Lidice” recalls a Nazi massacre with reverence for the victims — the entire village of Lidice, including 82 children — paying them a deeply moving tribute.

The program from the BSO’s classical series will be performed on Thursday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 7 at 8 p.m. (both at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall); and on Saturday, March 8 at 8 p.m. at the Music Center at Strathmore. To purchase tickets to these performances, click this link.

MUSIC FOR LITTLE ONES

In mid-March, families will be invited to explore an interactive musical journey through aquatic wonders by participating in the BSO’s “Music Box: Life in the Water” program. Host, Maria Broom and a piano quintet lead the 30-minute programs perfect for introducing little ones to music and the BSO. Broom and the quintet will guide the families through a sea of musical delight, singing about frogs and fish, and diving into music all about water.

These programs take place on Saturday, March 15 at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at the Blackrock Center for the Arts, and on Saturday March 22 at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. To purchase tickets to these performances, click this link.

TRIBUTE TO ROYALTY

Sir Duke gets his flowers from the Maestro himself as Heyward pays tribute to Ellington in a special program on Saturday, March 15. Drawing from the deep bench of hometown talent at his fingertips, Heyward will bring together Cyrus Chestnut on the piano; the Peabody Jazz Ensemble, directed by Sean Jones, the Peabody’s Richard and Elizabeth Case Chair in Jazz Studies; members of the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras; and members of BSO OrchKids. Heyward plans to celebrate Ellington’s philosophy of music “beyond category” by weaving together “America’s greatest art form with classical symphonic traditions,” according to the website.

This program takes place on Saturday, March 15 at 8 p.m. To purchase tickets to this performance, click this link.

SNAKES. WHY DID IT HAVE TO BE SNAKES?

The BSO has no plans to allow March to go out like a lamb, if their programming for the end of the month is any indication. On that last weekend, the orchestra will perform John Williams’ legendary score for the 1981 classic movie “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark” while audiences watch the movie on the big screen. Experience Harrison Ford’s first turn as the archeologist-turned-action hero while hearing the music played live from the stage by the full orchestra — hardly meek and soft, but definitely something to keep you going into April!

This program takes place on Friday, March 28 at 7:30 at the Music Center at Strathmore, Saturday, March 29 at 7:30 at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, and Sunday, March 30 at 3 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. To purchase tickets, click this link.
