Educational and inspirational activities to honor

Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday

Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and legacy through fun, educational activities at Port Discovery’s “I Have a Dream Weekend.”  

History will come alive for children throughout the weekend as they learn about African American inventors, visit with the Negro Baseball League, make a take home quilt with the Baltimore African American Quilters, and interact with living characters from the past portrayed by students from Northwood Elementary School. A variety of activities will be offered throughout the weekend, including during extended hours on Monday, January 16th. Admission is free with museum entry, which is $14.95 for guest ages two and up. Children under two and members are free. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit portdiscovery.org.

Saturday, January 14: Open 10AM to 5PM  

  • Learn about African American Inventors (10:00AM – Noon)
  • Make a quilt square with the Baltimore African American Quilters (10:00 AM– 3:00 PM)
  • Make Doves of Peace  (10:00AM – 3:00 PM)
  • Meet and greet the Negro Baseball League (10:00AM – 4:00PM)
  • Brick Nation (10:00AM – 4:00PM)
  • Take part in facepainting with Landre SFX (Noon – 2:00PM)
  • Sing & Dance with Kindersinger: Sing Happy Birthday to MLK (1:00PM & 1:30PM)
  • Visit with Wildlife Adventures (1:00PM – 4:00PM)
  • Make a birthday card for Martin Luther King, Jr. (10AM – Noon, 1:00PM – 3:00PM)
  • Enjoy interactive Circle Time (11:00 AM & Noon)

 Sunday, January 15: Open Noon to 5PM

  • Make a quilt square with the Baltimore African American Quilters (Noon – 3:00 PM)
  • Make Doves of Peace  (Noon – 3:00 PM)
  • Brick Nation (Noon – 3:00PM)
  • Meet and greet the Negro Baseball League (Noon– 4:00PM)
  • Visit with Wildlife Adventures (1:00PM – 4:00PM)
  • Sing and dance during Mr. Gabe’s Music Show (1:30 & 2:30 PM)
  • Make a birthday card for Martin Luther King, Jr. (2:00PM – 4:00PM)
  • Enjoy interactive Circle Time, Mother Goose on the Loose, Jingle Jangle Music Time and Kamishibai

 

Monday, January 16: Open 9:30AM to 5PM

  • Visit the Living Museum of African-Americans with Northwood Elementary School (10:00AM – Noon)
  • Learn about African American Inventions (10:00AM – Noon and 1:00PM – 3:00PM)
  • Learn to play Mancala (10:00AM – Noon and 1:00PM – 3:00PM)
  • Meet and greet the Negro Baseball League (10:00AM – 4:00PM)
  • Participate in our Interactive Circle Time (11:30AM & 2:30PM)
  • Make a quilt square with the Baltimore African American Quilters (Noon – 3:00 PM)
  • Make Doves of Peace  (Noon – 3:00 PM)
  • Sing & Dance with Kindersinger: Sing Happy Birthday to MLK (1:00PM & 1:30PM)
  • Visit with Wildlife Adventures (1:00PM – 4:00PM)
