The Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts and the Municipal Art Society of Baltimore City have announced an open call for two artists for two permanent, site-specific artworks for Lexington Market plaza. Artists living and working in Maryland and its contiguous states — Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. — are eligible, but artists living and working in Baltimore and across Maryland are especially encouraged to apply.
Artists may apply individually or as a team. The full application with additional information is available here and is due by Tuesday, March 23, 2021.
Baltimore developer Seawall is currently renovating Lexington Market with an expected opening in 2022 and with 50 vendors from across the city and state. The city-owned market is one of the oldest public markets in the country.
The new plaza will connect between Eutaw and Paca Streets, to add to the market a walkable, urban green space.
Applications must be submitted online and only complete applications will be shown to the artist selection committee. The full list of requirements for the Request for Qualifications is available here. Please note that no artwork proposals are to be submitted at this stage. The committee will select the semi-finalists first, and develop the artwork in the coming months. See the proposed timeline below for more clarity.
