The number of Marylanders hospitalized with COVID-19 fell just below 3,000 on Wednesday and has decreased further to 2,745 hospitalized coronavirus patients as of Friday morning.
Hospitalizations skyrocketed after the winter holidays, peaking at 3,462 on Jan. 11. The metric has declined every day since then, although it remains higher than levels seen before the omicron-fueled surge.
Maryland health officials newly reported 4,736 confirmed coronavirus cases on Friday, bringing the state’s total number of confirmed cases to date to 927,097. Of that total, 45,175 cases were reported since last Friday.
The statewide, seven-day average case rate per 100,000 people continues to decline, with the metric reaching an average of 106.58 cases per 100,000 people on Friday. This time last week, the average was 184.3 cases per 100,000 people.
The seven-day average positivity rate fell to 17.14% on Friday, down from last Friday’s average of 24.77%.
A total of 12,751 Marylanders are confirmed to have died from COVID-19, including 448 deaths that were reported in the past week.
To date, there have also been 252 residents whose deaths are suspected to be linked to the virus.
Among Marylanders who received initial vaccine doses, the state has administered 4,025,236 second doses of a two-dose vaccine (66.58% of the state’s population) and 330,904 doses of a single-dose vaccine (5.473% of the state’s population).
There have been 1,916,538 booster shots administered in Maryland, with 94,221 booster doses reported since last Friday, about a 5.1704% increase.
