Maryland’s confirmed coronavirus cases rose by more than 1,000 new cases on Thursday for the first time in nearly a month, and then again on Friday, state data show.
State health officials reported 1,079 new cases on Thursday and 1,082 new cases on Friday. The last time Maryland recorded more than 1,000 new cases in a day was on Oct. 21, with 1,069 new cases.
Maryland has confirmed a total of 575,996 cases of COVID-19 to date, including 6,173 cases recorded since last Friday.
Meanwhile, the state has recorded 4,553,637 negative test results to date.
Officials have confirmed that at least 10,869 residents have died from coronavirus to date. Of those COVID-19 fatalities, 71 were reported in the past week.
There are also 233 Marylanders whose deaths are suspected to be related to coronavirus.
As of Friday morning, the state’s seven-day average positivity rate sits at 3.43%. This time last week, the average was 3.26%.
There are currently 554 Marylanders hospitalized due to COVID-19, including 420 in acute care and 134 in intensive care.
Among the acute care COVID-19 patients, 418 are adults and two are children.
Of the coronavirus patients in intensive care, 133 are adults and one is a child.
A week ago, there were 509 Marylanders hospitalized with COVID-19.
Charles County is currently the only Maryland jurisdiction experiencing moderate levels of coronavirus transmission, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded on Friday.
Maryland’s remaining 23 jurisdictions are experiencing substantial (seven jurisdictions) and high (16 jurisdictions) transmission levels.
Of the initial doses of coronavirus vaccines, 61.787% of Marylanders received both doses of a two-dose vaccine and 5.25% received a single-dose vaccine.
There have been 802,987 booster shots administered in Maryland, an increase of 229,153 shots since this time last week.
