With any luck, Dr. Ben Carson will keep it bland and safe during his Johns Hopkins commencement speech — something about moving ever onward and how money doesn’t bring lasting happiness. Okay, one oblique reference to his recent gaffes. He can say he’s “never been afraid to go against the grain” or something.

Then Hopkins grads can get on with their commencement without thinking about Carson’s unfortunate comparison of same-sex marriage to bestiality and pedophilia, or his unfortunate slander against “white liberals” (“the most racist people out there”), or his unfortunate “plantation” metaphor.

Because Carson will speak at commencement after all. After a closed-door meeting between graduating students and the dean of Johns Hopkins Medicine, it was decided that Carson would stay on as a speaker, despite a petition to have him removed after his minor cascade of political incorrectness.

  1. It is interesting to note that the authors of the petition were only able to obtain 8 signatures, and they were not from the senior class exclusively, but rather were from the entire student population. Dr. Carson is a world-renowned and respected neurosurgeon, who succeeded despite the overwhelming odds against his doing so. If you don’t take his comments out of context, you would have a much more accurate picture of him. I suggest reading his book, “Gifted Hands”.
