National women’s fashion magazine Elle has named Ruth Shaw in the Village of Cross Keys the best boutique in Maryland in its “50 States of Shopping” feature. “Why you’ll love it: The staff knows its brands—however obscure,” the magazine’s online edition reads.
For you cynics who assume it’s a paid promotion, it’s not. The staff asked designers which stores to include, according to store owner Ray Mitchener. The boutique has been recognized before in women’s fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar in its annual “Fashion Destination Standout” feature, but this is the store’s first time in Elle.
“We’re just excited to be put in the company of Alchemist in Miami, Tootsie’s in Atlanta and Barney’s,” said Ray. “Those are stores that deliver fashion, not just clothes.” Ruth Shaw carries high-end designers like Alexander Wang, Isabel Marant, Jason Wu, Sophie Theallet and The Row.
Not that we’re competitive with D.C., but it’s worth mentioning that the store beat out all those fancy stores on Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda, Maryland. Just sayin’…
By the way, Ray takes umbrage with the “Third Worst-Dressed People” designation Baltimore received in Travel & Leisure. “Certainly if you go to the Inner Harbor and see the tourists you might come away with that impression,” he said. “But that’s not what I see.”
Next time, T & L, please stop in Baltimore’s nationally recognized best boutique before you slam us with a worst-dressed label. Okay?
