The UMBC Retrievers menโ€™s basketball team captured international headlines with their March Madness magic, becoming the first No. 16 seed to beat a No. 1 seed in the history of the menโ€™s tournament. Now, a group of alumniโ€“including some players from that historic teamโ€“going by the name Hilltop Dawgs is competing for $2 million in The Basketball Tournament.

In short, the tourney brings together 64 teams, comprised of current and former pros, college standouts, street ballers and many more, for a bracket-style tournament like the more famous college one. Once again, the semifinals and finals will be played at Morgan State University, on Aug. 2-3, and aired on ESPN.

Seeing as our own Ethan McLeod is one of the biggest local boosters to make TBT a thing, it seems only fitting we direct your attention to City of Gods today, where there will be a pep rally for the Hilltop Dawgs with food, drinks, entertainment and more.

The apparel store near Hollins Market has sponsored teams in past tournaments, but since their squad decided to sit this year out, they wanted to back another โ€œhometown favorite.โ€ And you should too.

4-8 p.m., City of Gods, 1118 Hollins Street, (410) 350-4382, city-of-gods-shop.com, free.
