Baltimore’s two historically black colleges face off tonight for the second time this season, with the Bears hosting the Eagles on their home court for Senior Night.
If their first matchup—an 80-73 overtime home win for the Eagles back on Jan. 20—was any sign, this should be a great game. While the Bears (10-17) have been admittedly middling this year, as has Coppin State (5-24) in year one with Terps legend Juan Dixon at the helm, both teams sit in the middle of the pack in their conference, and are seeking wins for better seeding in MEAC tournament play, which begins next Monday down in Norfolk. (A reminder to all non-hoops followers: a conference tournament win means a guaranteed spot in March Madness.)
While Coppin already beat Morgan once, and has recorded all five of its wins this season against in-conference competitors, Morgan should be fired up after a frustrating (and historic, for their opponent) forfeit loss to Hampton University last night.
For Senior Night, Morgan will be honoring star guard Tiwian Kendley (26.2 PPG) and forward Phillip Carr (13.6 PPG, 9.5 RPG), who both happen to be leading the team in scoring. This will be their final home game played at Hill Field House.
Those who can’t make it out to Morgan can watch the game live online here, or listen in on WEAA 88.9 FM.
Game starts at 8 p.m., tickets $10. Hill Field House, 1700 E. Cold Spring Lane, Baltimore, 21251, (443) 885-4487 (box office).
