The way people like to police the use of “literally” I hesitated to put it in the headline, but I think this ought to count. Business Insider published a hilarious article — well, hilarious if you’re from Maryland — displaying a map that ranks states by the number of Olympic gold medals their natives have won. California dominates with 122, but Maryland actually manages to squeak its way into the top ten with 18.
Of course with Michael Phelps’s 11 we’d be much deeper in the field. (Phelps actually has 18 golds, but for this, only individual medals were counted.) And Business Insider rightly that even if Phelps were a state unto himself, he’d still be ranked pretty high.
So, here’s to Maryland and our illustrious history of Olympic gold medalists.
