As we’ve chronicled a number of times before, we’re huge fans of This American Life alumna Sarah Koenig’s new podcast Serial, which centers on the murder of a Baltimore high school student in 1999. But as it becomes increasingly impossible to ignore that the case involves real people with real feelings, it’s getting harder to enjoy Koenig’s storytelling without guilt pangs.
It’s nice to hear, then, that the Serial obsessives of Reddit have found a way to turn their interest in the case into something positive: They’re trying to raise $25,000 to start a scholarship in honor of the murdered student at the center of the case, Hae Min Lee. The scholarship will be awarded to a senior at Baltimore’s Woodlawn High, where Lee was a student.
“We know that all the media attention focusing on their small part of Baltimore isn’t always positive or constructive, so we wanted to do something clearly positive,” one of the sub-Reddit’s moderators, Jacob White, told the Baltimore Sun. So far, they’ve raised under $1,000… which is a little depressing, given the popularity of both the show and the Reddit forum. Donate here, if you’re so inclined.
