Canton Waterfront Park filled up once again Friday night as WTMD’s First Thursday concerts returned for a new season. While the VIPs appeared to be having a good time up close and the blankets spread on the grass looked relaxing, this late-arriving writer sought out the only space that seemed to be free: behind the stage.
Along with plenty of ability to hear, this offered an excellent view of the harbor. After sets from Kopecky and Marah, Timothy Showalter of Philly-based Strand of Oaks encouraged everyone to “get loose.” In truth, his long hair offered the encouragement in itself. After a set of their own solos and looping melodies, the band ended on a raucous note with a cover of The Replacements’ “Alex Chilton,” sending everyone home happy, and perhaps wanting more.
It won’t be from Strand of Oaks, but there will indeed be more First Thursday next month. On Friday, WTMD announced the June lineup: The Lone Bellow, Brooklyn-based Rubblebucket and Lilitz, Pa.’s own The Districts.
