FIVE TIPS FOR TRANSFORMING YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE THIS SUMMER FROM NOUVEAU HOME INTERIOR DESIGN

– By Steve Appel, co-owner, Nouveau Home and Interior Design

It’s summer and the living is easy…and outdoors. Now that we’re spending so much time on the patio, deck, or terrace, it’s time to transform outdoor spaces into rooms for entertaining and relaxing.

After solving design dilemmas though our Happy Hour Design Consultations, we’ve come up with tips to help you make the most of your outdoor living spaces. Try a few on your own, or give us a call for advice.

  1. Start with a focal point.

Fire pits are hotter than ever. With a wide variety of designs to choose from, you can easily find one that’s right for your home and build a seating arrangement around it. Or use an outdoor sculpture as a focal point. Either way, you’ll start a conversation.

  1. Decide on a color scheme.

Look around you for ideas. If your backyard is lush with lime green hostas pull a little of that color in with cushions in solids and stripes. Or, let your favorite destination inspire you. Love South Beach? Add some black and white striped curtains for glamour – and a little privacy.

  1. Take advantage of the new weather-worthy products.

Splurge on a comfortable sectional for lounging and order cushions in fade-resistant Sunbrella fabric, or quick-drying slip. Create a mood with floor and table lamps designed for the outdoors, add a fan, and throw down an outdoor rug. Function and fashion can be combined.

  1. Add a few pieces for fun.

Just in from High Point: ceramic garden stools resembling chess pieces. They do double-duty as sculpture and seating, so add one or two in a great finish like bronze. Or, pick out a stunning new bar cart in matte gold, another hot finish this season.

  1. Up your dinnerware and barware.

Recycle your paper plates and cups, right now! Today, you can find beautiful, affordable dishes and glasses suitable for entertaining outdoors. Select pieces that reflect your taste, set them up with a retro elegant decanter and ice bucket. Then, lift your glass for a toast. It’s summer!
