A sailor, a mermaid, and a crab walk into a bar…it must be Fleet Week!

“Fleet Week Festivals! Maryland Fleet Week & Flyover Baltimore” is a set of free events presented by Northrop Grumman, taking place June 12-18. It will feature three fun festivals, including two in Baltimore City (Inner Harbor & Fells Point) and one in Baltimore County at Martin State Airport.

The lineup will include live musical performances from local and Navy bands, food and drink, military- and maritime-themed exhibits, artist and maker booths, and family-friendly activities for all to enjoy. There will be a Crab Soup Cook-off, vintage aircraft to admire, a Navy bluegrass band, and a Rum Punch Tour.

“Maryland Fleet Week & Flyover Baltimore presented by Northrop Grumman is a week-long FREE celebration that brings together the ‘Fleet, Flights, and Festivals’, and honors the dedication of service members who defend our freedoms at sea and in the air, both past and present,” reads the press release. “It offers a chance for the public to board contemporary naval ships to see sailors’ work up close and to explore historic vessels, providing a window into naval life across history.”

Ever cognizant of the tragic backdrop against which the festivals will take place this year, the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the organizers are working to balance respecting and paying tribute to those whose lives were lost or forever altered with bringing joy to a community bruised by recent events.

“We are mindful of the recent tragedy the community has faced with the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. We are collaborating closely with our partners to ensure Maryland Fleet Week & Flyover Baltimore is safe and celebratory. This year’s theme, #MarylandTough #BaltimoreStrong, reflects our community’s resilience and honors the enduring spirit of our waterfront and port,” said Chris Rowsom, Fleet Week 2024 Director for Living Classrooms.

Consistent with Baltimore’s historical and cultural identity that resonates both resilience and joy, Fleet Week 2024 will reflect both in three locations of festivities celebrating our naval heritage. What follows is a brief and hardly comprehensive summary of activities in each location and festival.
