General Assembly Debates Driver Licenses for Undocumented Immigrants

Right now, Maryland’s practice of granting undocumented immigrants second-class driver licenses is set to expire on July 1, 2015. In response, Sen. Victor Ramirez has introduced legislation that would allow the practice to continue indefinitely. And this year’s rendition of the endless debate on illegal immigration has officially opened.

According to Maryland Reporter, opponents of the bill warn of Maryland’s becoming a “magnet” for the undocumented and argue that licensing these people to drive rewards illegal behavior. Supporters say that more drivers being licensed and insured makes driving safer for everyone.

I say, let’s start differentiating between undocumented immigration and actual crime. Licensing someone to drive is not rewarding illegal behavior.
