Don’t be surprised if you notice an influx of rainbow wigs and unicorn horns around town this weekend (August 2 – 4) . That’s just BronyCon 2013, the convention for teenage and adult fans of the cartoon TV show My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. (The focus is usually on the guys, but gals are a part of this subculture too.) This is the first year the event will be hosted at the Baltimore Convention Center.
Like Otakon, BronyCon will give Baltimore an eyeful of brightly colored costumes. And with over 6,000 attendees, it shouldn’t be a bad thing for local businesses. And by the way, the ever-growing festival has called the convention center “a venue that can expand just as large as we need it,” so hopefully they’ll be coming back next year!
And yes, they’re for real. Meet one of Maryland’s own Bronies, a 25-year-old electrician from Pasadena, in this video produced by the Baltimore Sun.
