Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, a Democrat, enjoys a slight lead in the race for Maryland’s open U.S. Senate seat, but her Republican rival, former Gov. Larry Hogan, maintains a strong approval rating, a new poll by Gonzales Research & Media Services finds.

The Gonzales poll surveyed 820 registered Maryland voters, who said they are likely to vote in the 2024 general election, by phone from Aug. 24-30. The poll results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

If the election was held today, 46% of respondents said they would vote for Alsobrooks, while 41% favored Hogan. Meanwhile, 11% of voters have not decided whom they will vote for, and 1% said they will vote for someone other than the two major parties’ nominees for U.S. Senate.

In a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans 2-to-1, the winning candidate will have to secure solid support from Democratic voters.

Currently, 72% of Democratic voters said they would vote for Alsobrooks, while 21% would vote for Hogan. The Gonzales poll notes that Hogan will need to increase his share of Democratic support by about 10 points to win the November election.

Across Maryland, 40% of voters had a favorable opinion of Alsobrooks, while 7% had an unfavorable opinion of her. Additionally, 20% had a neutral opinion of the Democratic candidate and 34% did not recognize her name.

Hogan, meanwhile, had a 50% favorable rating and 19% unfavorable rating. Another 29% had a neutral opinion of the former governor and 2% did not recognize his name.
