Gov. Wes Moore has proclaimed Nov. 22, 2025, “American Visionary Art Museum Day” in Maryland, in honor of its 30th anniversary this month.
The museum opened to the public on Nov. 24, 1995, at 800 Key Highway in Baltimore as an artistic and educational center for self-taught, intuitive artistry and was designated by the U.S. Congress as America’s National Museum for Visionary Art. Its grand opening took place over the Thanksgiving weekend in 1995, and the museum is marking the occasion this year with a day of activities on Nov. 22.
“For three decades, the American Visionary Art Museum has stood as a beacon of creativity, inclusivity, and imagination – celebrating artists from every walk of life whose work springs from powerful personal vision rather than formal training,” the governor’s proclamation states.
“The American Visionary Art Museum’s mission to champion the intuitive artist and their diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and artistry has enriched Baltimore and Maryland’s cultural landscape and inspired millions of visitors from around the world…
“In pursuance of that mission, the American Visionary Art Museum fosters an inclusive museum culture that honors the contributions and experiences of every artist, employee, volunteer, and visitor, creating a space where all feel welcomed, valued and seen…
“The American Visionary Art Museum continues to nurture creativity, compassion, and curiosity through its award-winning exhibitions, joyful community events, and educational programming, demonstrating that visionary art has the power to uplift the human spirit and connect us across our differences…
“The American Visionary Art Museum’s vision that everyone deserves access to a full, vibrant, and creative life embodies the very heart of Baltimore’s identity as a city of makers, dreamers, and innovators.”
Moore, Lt. Governor Aruna Miller, and Maryland Secretary of State Susan Lee signed the proclamation.
The birthday celebration, called “Cheers to 30 Years: AVAM’s Birthday Bash,” will take place on Nov. 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a scavenger hunt, guided tours, a screen-painting demonstration, birthday cake, face-painting, artist meet-and-greets and other activities included in the price of admission.
